I carefully read reviews and researched Onkyo SKS-HT540 7.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System before buying and im NOT disappointed. They are functional looking with black wood grain cabinets and removable covers. I like their looks because they are classic and not flashy. I wanted quality over looks. These speakers don't try to look trendy, they just produce great sound. If you're going for styling in your speakers to match your decor, look elsewhere.

I primarily use the equipment in a home theater, which doubles as a part-time family room for watching TV. The center channel is strong which is a great plus for dialogue. The bass isn't the strongest available, but it's strong enough for small rooms. The Onkyo SKS-HT540 setup was easy. It took a little while but, if one carefully follows the directions provided, it is a simple task that anyone could do.

I am very happy with my purchase. I have heard much more expensive home theater systems, but Onkyo SKS-HT540 7.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System does a great job for the cost.

The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX5V camera is so much fun to play. Panoramic shots are better as stated in about every review. The low light shooting different from DSLR quality but its better than every other one in pocket camera class, although it can still be better. The amount of functions and spec you get are aw3some for the price. The only drawback is noise reduction. This point and shoot digital camera is not for user who want to print anything bigger than 8x10. Anything smaller or just computer/webshots is almost ideal. Samsung announced its new N110 netbook, which includes the same memory and storage capacity as its predecessor, the NC10.

The new netbook from Samsung features 1.6 GHz Atom N270 processor and a keyboard borrowed from the NC10 model.

The N110 netbook, however, includes a bigger battery, which allows the device to work on a single battery charge for 8 hours.

In addition, Samsung's new gadget includes a more user-friendly touch pad. While the N110 didn’t get a drastic remodeling, the matte lid has been replaced with a black glossy coating, and though it looks sleeker, it’s a magnet for fingerprints. Remember last week's story about Jason Johnson, the Illinois man who sued Microsoft over his Xbox 360's alleged habit of scratching his game DVDs?

Documents unsealed in his court case revealed Microsoft discovered its Xbox 360 could scratch discs before it went on sale in 2005, and even got as far as considering three possible solutions to the problem, the Seattle Tech Report revealed today.

The characteristic circular scratches can occur whenever the orientation of the console -- which is designed to be used in either a horizontal or vertical position -- is changed while the drive is spinning. Johnson filed his suit after his console scratched three store-bought game discs, and is seeking $50,000 in punitive damages.

Testimony obtained from a Microsoft program manager indicates that Microsoft became aware of the problem months before the 360's launch when retail demonstration consoles malfunctioned. The company examined three solutions: strengthening the magnets that hold the discs in place, slowing the rotational speed of the discs, and installing rubber bumpers to cushion the discs, but rejected them all. Installing the bumpers could have cost as little as $0.50 per console, the suit claims.

It's not the first time Microsoft has come under fire for alleged foreknowledge of Xbox 360 hardware issues, either. Back in September, an expose penned by VentureBeat writer Dean Takahashi claimed systemic failures in Microsoft's design and quality assurance processes lead to the Xbox 360's now-infamous overheating "Red Ring of Death" failures.

But the company warned that other versions were also potentially vulnerable.

As many as 10,000 websites have been compromised since last week to take advantage of the security flow, said antivirus software maker Trend Micro.

The websites have been mostly serving up programs that steal computer game passwords, but the flaw could be "adopted by more financially motivated criminals", a Trend Micro security researcher said on Monday.

On the whole, the results were satisfactory as evidenced in subsequent evaluations. That said, the calibrated results were not reflected onscreen due to a compatibility issue. These were still registered as factory default leaving us with no means to verify parameters such as speaker delay. Another known design issue was the DVD playback video resolution which reset to 480p whenever the input was toggled. Its representative claimed this was meant for non-HD-ready TVs but it's difficult to comprehend why such a situation arises at all.

Moving onto music reproduction, the height-optimized TQX-120 delivered excellent stereo imaging and a subtle forward-sounding soundstage. Most musical instruments here were favorably reproduced, while bass was well integrated and not overpowering.

Playstation 3 Getting a Firmware Upgrade with 2.53 Version

Sony's PlayStation 3 is getting a firmware upgrade today bringing it up to version 2.53. The biggest updates are support for Flash Player 9 as well as full-screen Flash support.

Hot on the heels of the monumentally ho-hum version 2.52 update, Sony is ready to unleash an all-new world of excitement with firmware update 2.53, scheduled for release tomorrow.

According to the update notes, the firmware update will introduce full-screen support for Adobe Flash Player content in the web browser, meaning you'll be able to full-screen your choppy internet video instead of just sitting really close the the TV and squinting.

The writers from the future on the PlayStation website mention that firmware 2.53 was released on November 26th. Our time stream should be catching up to theirs shortly.

Cyber Monday::The Biggest Shopping Days

Monday will be one of the biggest online shopping days of the year, and also one of the most treacherous.

On Cyber Monday, the first Monday after Thanksgiving, consumers are expected to spend $821 million this year, up 12% from 2007, says Robert Williams, CEO of Conversive, a customer-service software company for online merchants. Monday may be the biggest day in a $44 billion online holiday shopping season, predicts Forrester Research.

But a wobbly economy, combined with a consumer thirst for too-good-to-be-true bargains, has motivated cybercrooks to unleash a torrent of spam, phishing scams and malicious software.

"The downturn will prompt more attempts by cybercrooks, because consumers — in their haste to save costs — may be more susceptible to scams," says Ori Eisen, founder of 41st Parameter, an Internet fraud detection and prevention service.

Threats are everywhere, PC security experts say, and Monday will bring a plague of them. Last year, phishing attacks soared 300% on Thanksgiving, compared with the previous few days, and this year is expected to be worse, computer-security firm Cyveillance says. It predicts cybercriminals this year will launch even more sophisticated phishing attacks on bargain-hunters, as well as on small businesses and credit unions that lack strong anti-virus software and firewalls.

Mainstream sites aren't completely safe, either, says Mike Van Bruinisse, president of computer-security firm Purewire. Some enterprising hackers have injected malicious software code into user comments and ads with links to popular e-commerce sites. "Stick to core content on those sites, and don't get distracted by other stuff," Van Bruinisse says.

Crooks also have targeted online buyers eschewing credit cards in this economy for debit cards, says Paul Henninger, director of fraud solutions at anti-fraud software maker Actimize. Debit card fraud is especially perilous because it gives hackers access to a bank account, he says.

Still, consumers can take simple steps to protect themselves. Security experts urge PC users to be wary of cut-rate deals from unfamiliar online merchants. They also suggest using multiple passwords when shopping and using the most up-to-date Web browsers and anti-virus software.

"Look, the Internet can be scary," says Michael Barrett, chief information security officer at PayPal, eBay's online payments unit. "But you can be pretty safe if you take precautionary measures."

How To Buy an HDTV For Tomorrow (or Any Day)

Despite this month looking like the kick-off to the next Great Depression, a bunch of you are probably still planning to (finally) hop on the HDTV bandwagon. And all things considered, that's not a totally stupid move. A great HDTV—one that will blow away the standard definition puke you've been watching for years—can be had for a damn good price. But if you're planning on checking out HDTVs tomorrow (or ever), read this first:

LCD, Plasma or DLP?
Yes that's right boys and girls, despite popular imagination, you really have three delicious choices for a brand new HDTV tomorrow. Here are the current ups and downs of each—not those trite increasingly dated "facts" you've heard a million damn times before.

DLP
The biggest reason to go with DLP is it's the biggest—that you can afford. Do you want a 73-inch 1080p HDTV for $2500? DLP, baby. Hell, a premium 61-inch LED-backlit model is just $1900. If you're looking for a set over 50 inches, as a rule, you should look at DLP rear-projection. They've got great blacks, so crappy contrast isn't an issue, and LED-backlit models are instant-on, with better color accuracy and a longer lifetime than earlier light-bulb-based sets.

DLPs aren't perfect, like any other TV tech. The majorest thing you have to watch out for is the viewing angle. If you're sitting in the sweet spot, DLP's picture beats ass. If you're off too far to the side, and especially too high or low, you won't be able to see anything. This means buying one means determining its placement first—this isn't a TV you watch from the family room while making dinner in the kitchen.

In cheaper sets, you can also see what's called the rainbow effect, where the colors flicker as they change on screen (some people notice, most don't, and technology has made it less of an issue). Finally, while DLP sets can be lighter than LCDs and plasmas in the weight department, they're chunkier, and don't usually work with wall mounts.

Plasma
We've covered plasma tech more in-depth before, but the major reasons to consider plasma are that it pretty much crushes all but the most obscenely expensive LCDs in blacks, contrast and blur-free motion. In other words, there's a reason plasmas consistently hold the title of best TV in the world. And old issues like burn-in and short life-spans really aren't considerations anymore. Newer sets have half-lives of 60,000 hours and tech to avoid burn in (which, after the first 100 hours, you'd have to try really hard to make happen).

So what's not to like? Well, plasmas are certifiable energy hogs, using double the power of LCD, so they're the least "green" set. They're often more expensive than the equivalent-sized LCD. They're not quite as bright as LCDs, though for us, they're usually plenty bright. And they're generally a touch (but not much) heavier. In the end, whether you go plasma is a consideration of how much money you wanna spend, both upfront and on the power bill.

LCD
Like plasma, we covered LCD tech more in-depth earlier. So, what can we say about LCDs? They're the people's HD technology, and pretty much your default choice if you wanna go HD, particularly if you're looking for something 42" or smaller. They deliver much better blacks and contrast than they used to, and improve all the time. They're thinner and lighter on the whole than the competition—some are insanely thin—and at similar sizes are cheaper and use less power than plasmas. (LCDs can also be easily "greened" by dialing down their backlights—easy to do, especially at night.) If you watch most of your TV in a brightly lit room, LCD is tops because they tend to be the brightest sets, and it's not like blacks matter as much then anyway. LED-backlit sets produce some near plasma quality pictures, but they're much pricier, and tend to be exempt from Black Friday blow-out pricing.

From a pure picture standpoint, we generally favor plasma, especially when sorting through the bargain bin. LCD doesn't deliver blacks that are as deep as plasma, or contrast that's quite as texturey. When you're looking at LCDs especially, you need to pay attention to the blacks and contrast, or you will suffer. When you're in the store or poking around spec sheets, be sure to check the response time of the panel—6ms is as "slow" as you want, though faster panels, like 4ms, would be better. Speedier panels have less motion blur. (120Hz technology was designed to compensate for panel limitations, but it tends to be a step-up in cost, though not as much of a step-up as LED backlighting.)

720p vs. 1080p or How to Save Money With a Tape Measure
Here's the thing about whether or not you need to blow the bucks on 1080p—it depends on your big your TV is, and how far away you're sitting. Under 40 inches you usually cannot tell the difference unless your nose is pressed up against the glass, and your mama told you never to do that. Bigger than that, it depends on how far away you're sitting. The average viewing distance from a TV in an American home is nine feet. At that distance, it takes at least a 46-inch TV to see all the details of a 720p picture. For a 1080p set, you would need a 70-inch set! If you buy a 42-inch 1080p set, you should place it within six feet to make the most of it, seven feet for a 50-inch 1080p set. If you measure your living room and the distance is much greater, you should seriously consider buying the last of the 720p sets available at serious cheapness. Lest you think we're making all this up, HD Guru's got a PDF chart with distances and the right TV size for each resolution.

Checking Out the Tubes
Even if you do plan to buy your eventual set online, you really do need to check it (and the competition) out in person. Definitely price compare online (our Best of Black Friday roundup should help you there). Home Entertainment Mag recommends skipping Best Buy and Circuit City when it comes time to evaluate picture quality, because they won't be tuned correctly and in the store it'll look seriously different than it will in your house. A custom retailer will usually be a better bet, since they're more likely to let you play your own discs on the TV and have it set up in a room more closely resembling your living room. They're also more likely to want to reach you later to seal that deal, though, so be prepared for the intimacy of commissioned sales.

Wherever you go, there are some basic things the pros look for as we discussed in detail a few weeks back. A recap: Contrast is king. Cup your hands around a black area to see if it glows or if it's actually black. Also, how does it smoothly transition from dark to light? Deep black without the ability to create shades of dark gray is no good either. Next is viewing angle: Can you actually see the picture standing off to the sides or from slightly above and below? Or is it all screwy? LCDs might lose color saturation, or even shift in color so that people look unnaturally pink. You want the widest possible viewing angle. Another good one is the motion resolution test. Can you make out fine details when things are in motion? Sports are a great check for this—pin stripes, hair, fans in the stands, anything that's likely to blur into nothingness. Finally, how does it look overall? Colors should pop and the whole thing should have a nice clean image to it. After all, that's why you're upgrading.

Extras and Accessories
You've picked out your set, you're okay with the price—you're gonna do it. Congratulations. But there are a few more things to consider that the retailer is probably going to throw at you. Skip the pricey HDMI cables. We've tested them, under five meters, any cheapos from MonoPrice.com or the like will be just fine for delivering the most dense 1080p signal.

Warranty? Skip it unless you like to play your Wii strapless, or you've got small children who enjoy acting out shows on TV as they're playing. Plasmas and LCDs are fairly low on the list of repair risks, and most of the stuff that would go wrong is covered by the manufacturer's warranty. It never hurts to use a credit card that'll turboboost the existing warranty, of course.

Stand or wall mount? If you're going the latter route, you need to read up on and plan that sucker out before you walk out of Best Buy with your new TV. Why? Weight matters, and you usually have to center a mount on a wall stud—or two—so you need to know the width of the TV set itself. (Note to any numbskulls out there: The inch measurement of a TV represents the diagonal measurement of the 16:9 screen, so two 42-inch TVs could have wildly different widths depending on speaker placement and bezel thickness.) If you screw this up, your TV could wind up shattered on the floor, a fate that is generally not covered by warranty.

Oh, and if you're actually going to Circuit City or Fry's to pick your TV up yourself, bring a friend, and a truck or SUV. HDTVs might be getting lighter and thinner, but it doesn't mean they aren't too heavy for you to carry the whole quarter mile from the store to your crap mall parking spot. Also, ask the store for box measurements, or measure it yourself, because the box the TV comes in is always way bigger than the TV. In other words, it probably won't fit in your Prius.

ASUS U6V-V1-Bamboo 12.1-Inch Laptop for Thanksgiving Gift

Asustek Computer plans to debut a nature-friendly laptop PC with a casing made of bamboo on Saturday at Taiwan's IT Month exhibition.

The laptop, first announced last year, is part of Asus's efforts to use renewable materials in products. The shell of the laptop is made of real bamboo, which grows fast and is used widely throughout Asia in furniture, as well as construction scaffolding, food for pandas, and in artworks.

The company on Thursday displayed the first bamboo laptop that's ready for the market. The device is part of Asus's U6V series of notebook PCs and sports a 12.1-inch screen, Intel Core 2 Duo microprocessor, and Microsoft's Windows Vista OS.

Asus plans to sell them at the Taipei IT show for NT$59,900 (US$1,802) each.

The company will launch the bamboo laptops in the U.S. and Europe at a later date, but has not decided exactly when, an Asustek representative said.

IT Month in Taiwan is a time for companies to display products and normally ends up with bargains on IT gear for consumers. The exhibition is hosted in four major cities on the island, including at the Taipei World Trade Center exhibition halls from Nov. 29 to Dec. 7.

Nice feature, but not as nice as IS which reduces or compensates for actual camera shake electronically.

T-Mobile G1 Your Wait is Over??

On September 23, the world was officially introduced to the HTC Dream, now known as the T-Mobile G1, and the initial reaction ranged from "That's it?" to "I have to have it!" Unfortunately, we fell more into the "That's it?" camp. The T-Mobile G1 is manufactured by HTC and has a similar look and feel to the company's other Pocket PC smartphones, such as the T-Mobile Wing and the Sprint Mogul. Measuring 4.6 inches tall by 2.1 inches wide by 0.6 inch deep and weighing 5.6 ounces, the G1 is definitely not the sleekest device, and we certainly wouldn't call it sexy. Instead, the words "interesting" and "weird" come to mind. This is mostly because the bottom section of the phone juts out at a slight angle.The G1 definitely offers some functionality the original iPhone and the current iPhone 3G do not, including copy-and-paste capabilities, multimedia messaging, a better camera, and Google Street View. However, there are some serious design flaws and at this time, the G1 does not support stereo Bluetooth, Microsoft Exchange, or video recording. While these features may (and probably will be) added in the future, we feel like HTC, Google, and T-Mobile had the opportunity to really come out swinging and raise the bar, but didn't take full advantage of the opportunity.

However, it doesn't quite offer the mass appeal and ease of use of an iPhone, so the G1 isn't a good fit for anyone making the jump from a regular cell phone to their first smartphone. Power business users also might want to hold off until more corporate support and productivity applications are added. We'd say the T-Mobile G1 is best-suited for early adopters and gadget hounds who love tinkering around and modding their devices. We'll continue to test the G1 and applications as more are added, and though we hope for better hardware in the future, we're excited about Google Android and feel it could change the way we use smartphones. The T-Mobile G1 will be available through T-Mobile on October 22 in black or bronze and will cost $179.99 with a two-year contract.

Pros:
The T-Mobile G1 features a full QWERTY keyboard, 3G support, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth. The Google Android operating system offers good integration with Google applications as well as access to the Amazon MP3 Store and YouTube. As more applications become available, the G1 will also become a more powerful smartphone for all types of users.

Cons:
The G1 doesn't include a standard headphone jack and lacks stereo Bluetooth and Microsoft Exchange support. There are some annoying design quirks that make the smartphone uncomfortable to hold and difficult to use. The GPS tracking was disappointing, and speakerphone quality wasn't the greatest.

OverAll:
While we're not in love with the design and would have liked some additional features, the real beauty of the T-Mobile G1 is the Google Android platform, as it has the potential to make smartphones more personal and powerful. That said, it's not quite there yet, so for now, the G1 is best suited for early adopters and gadget hounds, rather than consumers and business users.

Lowest Google Android SmartPhone Price

Thinking of buying a T-Mobile G1..?, you might want to run to the nearest Wal-Mart instead of a T-Mobile store. According to CNNMoney.com, Wal-Mart will sell the first Google Android smartphone in 550 stores nationwide starting Wednesday and for a lower price.

T-Mobile currently sells the G1 for $179.99 with a two-year contract, but Wal-Mart will offer the device for $148.88 to new customers or current subscribers who are eligible for an upgrade. You'll, of course, still have to commit to a two-year service agreement.
